How Does, Compression Therapy Work for Swelling ?

Compression therapy uses carefully measured external pressure to support the veins, tissues, and lymphatic system in the legs. Compression wraps, stockings, or adjustable garments are designed to be firmest at the ankle and gradually less firm higher on the leg. This is called graduated compression.

That pressure helps limit the pooling of blood and fluid in the lower legs. When fluid collects in the tissues, the leg may swell, feel tight, ache, or become difficult to move. By gently supporting the leg from the outside, compression encourages fluid to move upward, where the body can circulate and process it more effectively.

The effect is not just cosmetic. Less swelling can improve comfort, make it easier to walk or transfer safely, reduce fluid leakage from fragile skin, and create a healthier environment for a wound to heal. Compression is often used for chronic venous insufficiency, venous leg ulcers, lymphedema, edema related to immobility, and swelling after certain injuries or procedures.
